Our Story
When it all Began
Dallas was settled by pioneers venturing west on the Oregon Trail beginning in the 1840s. Originally named “Cynthian,” or “Cynthiana,” the city was later named “Dallas” once selected as the county seat. Dallas quickly became a hub for the growing Oregon logging industry leading to the growth of the city through the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Dallas is home to industry leaders in the healthcare field and aerospace industry.

Settled on the northern banks of the Rickreall Creek by American pioneers. The settlement is later named “Cynthiana.”
Incorporated as "Dallas"
After being named the county seat for Polk County, the community incorporated as the town of “Dallas.”

Nationally Recognized Historic District
Downtown Dallas is designated a National Historic District by the National Parks Service
National Historic Designation
In 2024, the Dallas Downtown Historic District was established through the hard work of community leaders, historic preservation advocates, and the National Parks Service. With this designation, the buildings you see when you visit downtown Dallas are protected from unnecessary demolition.

Dallas proudly continues to preserve the history and story of our historic town. We partner closely with the State Historic Preservation Office, Main Street America, and our local Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Association to ensure that downtown is a thriving business hub and historical landmark
